About Us

Richard Burg, founder of Penumbra Training, is a police sergeant from the Metro Detroit/Southeast Michigan area. He has been an sworn officer for over a dozen years, having been assigned to the patrol, computer services, and detective bureaus of his local department. Richard has handled cases in all areas, from fraud to sexual assault to homicide. Richard holds numerous industry certifications relating to digital forensics and video analysis.

Through his assignments, Richard has developed an expertise in cybercrime, digital forensics, and security video technology, having obtained a variety of certifications in each field. Over his career, he has conducted hundreds of forensic extractions and examinations on mobile devices, computers, vehicles, and other related digital evidence items. As well, he has extracted video from thousands video systems in the course of investigations.

Richard is joined by his peers, detectives with experience in video recovery and the handling of digital evidence, in instructing the courses.

Penumbra was founded with law enforcement in mind, offering training in these cybercrime topics. We found that there was a lack of accessible, entry-level training for local, tribal, and state law enforcement agencies. The courses provided are geared toward all levels, from patrol to investigators to support staff. Training is also offered to government bodies that work closely with law enforcement in the investigation and prosecution of criminal activity.
